Where can my passport go?
Visa rules change often, sometimes with a few weeks’ notice. Use this checker to plan, then confirm on the destination’s official government or embassy site before you buy flights. Airlines check entry rules at the gate, so a wrong guess can cost you the whole trip.
What Do Visa-Free, Visa on Arrival, eTA and e-Visa Mean?
The checker sorts every country into one of six entry types. Here is what each one means in practice at the border.
| Result | What you do | Apply before flying? |
|---|---|---|
| Visa-free | Show your passport and enter. A day limit applies, usually 30–90 days. | No |
| Visa on arrival | Get the visa at the airport or border. Often a fee, paid in cash or by card. | No |
| eTA | A quick online travel authorization, often approved within minutes to days. | Yes |
| e-Visa | A full visa you apply for online and print or save on your phone. | Yes, allow 1–2 weeks |
| Visa required | Apply through the embassy or a visa center, often in person. | Yes, allow weeks |
| No admission | The country does not admit holders of this passport. | — |
Which Passports Get the Most Visa-Free Access?
By this dataset, the strongest passports open about 165–170 destinations without a pre-arranged visa (visa-free, on arrival or eTA). The weakest open fewer than 30. Pick a passport above to see your own number. Remember that “visa-free” still has a time limit. Stay longer and you risk a fine or a ban.
What Should I Check Before I Fly, Besides the Visa?
- Passport validity. Many countries want 6 months left on your passport and 1–2 blank pages.
- Proof of onward travel. Border officers and airlines often ask for a return or onward ticket.
- Accommodation and funds. Keep your first booking and a bank card on your phone, offline if possible.
- Transit rules. A layover can need its own transit visa, even if you never leave the airport.
- Mobile data on landing. Install your travel eSIM at home. You’ll need it to show bookings and order a ride. Not sure how much to buy? Use my eSIM data calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to travel?
It depends on your passport and destination. Pick both in the visa checker above to see if you can go visa-free, get a visa on arrival, need an eTA or e-visa, or must apply at an embassy.
What is the difference between an eTA and an e-visa?
An eTA is a short online travel authorization, usually approved in minutes to a few days. An e-visa is a full visa applied for online, with more documents and a longer wait, often 1-2 weeks.
How long can I stay in a visa-free country?
Each country sets its own limit, most often 30, 60 or 90 days. The checker shows the number of days where the data has it. Overstaying can lead to fines, deportation or an entry ban.
Is visa on arrival the same as visa-free?
No. With visa on arrival you still get a visa at the airport or border, often for a fee paid in cash. Visa-free means you just show your passport.
How up to date is this visa checker?
It uses the open Passport Index dataset, last updated in February 2026. Visa rules can change quickly, so always confirm on the official embassy or government website before booking.
Which passport can travel to the most countries?
In this dataset, the UAE, South Korea and Spain passports rank at the top, with Singapore and most EU passports close behind. Each opens about 165-170 destinations without a pre-arranged visa.
Do I need a phone plan abroad to cross the border?
Not by law, but it helps a lot. Border officers and taxi drivers often need you to show bookings or a return ticket on your phone. A travel eSIM set up before you fly gets you online as soon as you land.
