What Plug Adapter Do I Need? Plug Type Checker for 235 Countries
Pick your home country and your destination to see if your plugs fit, which adapter type to buy, and whether the voltage is different. Most phone and laptop chargers work on 100–240V, so they only need a plug adapter. Hair dryers and straighteners may also need a voltage converter.

What Are the Plug Types A to O?
There are 15 common plug types, named A to O. Many countries use more than one. Types C, E and F all take the thin two-pin Europlug, which is why Europe is easy for most travelers.
Do I Need a Voltage Converter or Just an Adapter?
An adapter only changes the shape of the plug. A converter changes the voltage. Most of the world runs on 220–240V, while the US, Canada, Mexico and Japan use 100–127V. Check the small print on your charger: if it says “INPUT 100–240V”, it works everywhere with just an adapter. Phones, laptops, tablets and camera chargers almost always do. Single-voltage heating devices, like hair dryers and curling irons, can burn out on 230V or run weak on 120V.

Frequently asked questions
What plug adapter do I need for Europe?
Most of mainland Europe uses Type C, E and F sockets, which all take the two-pin Europlug. Travelers from the US, UK or Australia need a Type C adapter. The UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus use Type G instead.
What is the difference between a plug adapter and a voltage converter?
A plug adapter changes the plug shape so it fits the socket. A voltage converter changes the electricity, for example from 230V to 120V. Most phone and laptop chargers handle 100-240V and only need an adapter.
Can I use my phone charger abroad?
Almost always, yes. Check the charger label: if it says INPUT 100-240V, it works in every country with just the right plug adapter.
Do I need an adapter for the UK?
Yes, unless you live in a country that uses Type G, like Ireland, Malta, the UAE or Hong Kong. The UK uses three rectangular pins at 230V.
Is a universal travel adapter worth it?
Yes, if you travel to more than one region. A good universal adapter covers Types A, C, G and I, which works in most countries, and models with USB-C ports can charge several devices at once.
Which countries use 110-120V?
The US, Canada, Mexico, most of Central America and parts of the Caribbean use 110-127V. Japan uses 100V. Most of the rest of the world uses 220-240V.
Why doesn't my plug fit even though the type matches?
Some sockets are recessed or older buildings use local variants. Italy's Type L and Switzerland's Type J, for example, accept thin Europlugs but not thicker German-style plugs. A universal adapter avoids this.
Plug and voltage data comes from the open TravelAdapter database (MIT license). Hotels and older buildings sometimes have different sockets, so a universal adapter is a safe backup. Flag images: Twemoji, CC-BY 4.0.
