How Is Flight Distance Calculated?
This calculator measures the great circle distance: the shortest path between two points on a sphere. That is why routes look curved on a flat map. A flight from New York to Tokyo, for example, flies far north over Canada and Alaska. Real flights are often a little longer, because planes follow air corridors and avoid closed airspace.
How Is Flight Time Estimated?
The estimate assumes an average speed of about 850 km/h (530 mph), plus 30 minutes for taxi, take-off and landing. Flights heading east are often faster thanks to the jet stream, while westbound flights take longer. Check your airline’s schedule for the exact time.
How Do I Prepare for a Long Flight?
- Beat jet lag early. For time differences of 3 hours or more, shift your sleep by an hour a day before you leave.
- Download offline. Save maps, boarding passes and entertainment before you board.
- Set up your eSIM at home. Install it before the flight and turn it on when you land, so you can message your hotel or call a ride straight away. My eSIM data calculator tells you how much data to buy.
- Check the paperwork. Use my visa checker and pack the right plug with the plug adapter checker.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the distance of a flight?
Pick your departure and arrival airports in the calculator above. It measures the great circle distance, the shortest path between the two airports over the Earth's surface, in kilometers and miles.
How long is a flight from London to New York?
London Heathrow to New York JFK is about 5,540 km (3,440 miles). A nonstop flight takes around 7 hours going west and often a bit less coming back east.
Why do flight routes look curved on a map?
The Earth is round, so the shortest path between two points is a curve called a great circle. Flat maps stretch the globe, which makes these straight routes look curved.
Is the real flight distance longer than the calculator shows?
Usually a little. Planes follow set air corridors, avoid closed airspace and bad weather, so the flown distance is often a few percent longer than the great circle distance.
Why are eastbound flights faster than westbound ones?
Strong high-altitude winds called the jet stream blow from west to east. Flying with them can save an hour or more on long flights, while flying against them adds time.
How is the time difference calculated?
The calculator compares the current local time at both airports using their official time zones, including daylight saving time where it applies today.
What is the longest flight in the world?
The longest scheduled nonstop flights, such as Singapore to New York, cover over 15,000 km and take around 18 to 19 hours.
